City Lights
In which I contemplate my feelings about Times Square.
Walking down 7th Avenue,
you feel like you’re in the future.
The street is lined
with elegant towers of glass
all covered with a kaleidoscope
of vivid colors
and brilliant light;
a dazzling monument
to modern innovation and technology.
But all of those lights scream in unison.
“A new drink
or phone
or watch
or game
will boost your health,
improve your work,
show your worth,
make you happy.”
Everything clamors to yank away
your attention,
your contentment,
your free will.
Does that have to be the future?
